City Championships remaining games Cancelled

News Image

Unfortunately mother nature has not cooperated with us once again. With the amount of rain we have already had this week and potentially more in the forecast SMSL has made the very difficult decision to cancel the remaining City playoff games for the 2026 Season.

The diamonds are in rough shape and we do NOT want to risk any injuries due to playing conditions, especially with Provincial championships season on the horizon.

This was a very difficult decision. We had games also scheduled during the day tomorrow (July 1st) however we feel that instead of the uncertainty of a) Playable diamonds and b) enough umpires available on a holiday to cover all the remaining games we felt the need to make a decision asap. Everyone can enjoy time with family and celebrate Canada Day.

There was a lot of consideration in cancelling City Championships in its entirety. After July 1st we are entering into Provincial Championship season.

With Provincials starting this weekend, we have Teams, and umpires leaving Thursday to attend provincials outside of Saskatoon. SMSL is host to U11A north girls, U11 boys, U17A girls, and U19A women's starting Friday morning and therefore will be using Thursday night to prepare. TCA is also hosting 32 teams in U11B Provincials and will also be preparing for provincials. So finishing City Playoffs this week is just not feasible.

Beyond this week? SMSL does not have the city diamonds booked past the week of July 1st. (so up July 3rd this season). many Slo-pitch leagues take over starting the next week. GH Complex is booked with SASA league games, families are on vacation etc. and again SMSL is hosting U13B and U15B provincial championships the weekend of July 10-12. So unfortunately pushing the city playoffs into next week again is just not feasible.

I do want to thank everyone involved who made it possible to get in as many playoff games as possible. Executives, schedulers, assignors, umpires, players, coaches and all involved, We ended up getting in over 80 exciting playoff games this season. Well done.

Again this was a very tough decision that wasn't made lightly.

Great season everyone and good luck to all the teams attending Provincial Championships. There will be some very exciting softball over the next couple weekends at Gordie Howe sports complex so bring your young athletes out and come watch some ball!!!

Regards,

SMSL
