Division A Teams require a high level of participation and time commitment (which increases as players move up in age). Please consider this carefully before indicating interest or availability to play on an A Team if selected.
A Teams typically play 2 league games per week, practice 2 or more times weekly, and regularly attend weekend tournaments. A Teams are formed before B Teams and generally begin indoor practices by mid-March.
Players trying out for A Teams are expected to be available for:
The financial commitment includes tournament fees. Teams often require startup player fees ($350+), and some teams participate in fundraising activities.
Softball Sask and the Saskatoon Minor Softball Association expect teams who qualify through Provincials to attend the Canadian Championships (U15). The top three ranked teams at Provincials qualify.
On the registration form, families indicate whether the player will try out for the A Team and confirm availability. By checking “Yes” and accepting a position on the U15A Team, performance bond requirements apply. If a team qualifies for the Canadian Championships (top 3 in Provincials), attendance is required. Should a player withdraw, the performance bond remains with the team and is used to fund a replacement player.
For U13, teams ranking in the top three attend the Western Canadian Championships, and the same bonding rules apply.
Division B Teams participate in league play, including a weekend league playoff tournament, and practice at least once per week.
Teams also compete in at least two tournaments.
Division B Teams may opt to participate in Provincials, which extends the season into mid-July. Players will continue to practice and play exhibition games following league wrap-up in preparation. Provincials are hosted at various locations across the province.
Registration includes a question about commitment to Provincials to ensure teams are formed with similar expectations. If a player commits during registration but later decides not to attend Provincials, the team may issue a fine.
Playing on a Division B Team still involves financial commitment, including tournament fees. Teams typically require startup player fees ($250+), and fundraising may occur.
